Images of Coins and Flowers
Coins over the eyes
-
It was a custom to place coins over the eyes of a dead body. It appears that there in a Pontius Pilate lepton coin over at least the right eye, given a close-up of the Shroud image. It seems to include a lituus and letters UCAI – initials for Tiberius Caesar. That is an alternative spelling, which also appears on an extant physical lepton. Images of Flowers
-
Oswald Scheuermannn had done experiments with corona discharge to image flowers onto photographic plates and onto linen. Scheuermann had also thus imaged a lepon coin on photographic plates as well as linen. [Whanger 1998, 28-28, 74]

Because the images of flowers are so faint photos of the Shroud were enhanced in the non-image areas. This enabled Alan Whanger [1998, 71-76] to use his special Polarized Image Overlay Technique to better verify that the fuzzy images really are flowers—flowers that are not only local to Jerusalem but bloom in the Spring, which is when Jesus was crucified.

Much of the identification was done in corroboration with Avinoam Danin, Professor of Botany of The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. [Whanger 1998, 73, 79]

There seem to be bouquets of flowers on the abdomen and near the hands. There also is Ridolfia segetum, where the Shroud was folded around the top of the head. A slightly wilted Chrysanthemum coronarium can be identified, as well as the fruits of Pistacia lentiscus. [Whanger 1998, 74-76]
